# Medial Calcaneal Neuritis

# Pain on Inside of the Ankle

## What could be my problem?

The medial calcaneal nerve is a section of tibial nerve that travels downwards to the inner side of the ankle. It supplies the skin over the inner side of heel. The symptoms of Medial Calcaneal Neuritis are similar to [tarsal tunnel syndrome](https://www.texasfootsurgeons.com/services/foot-pain/tarsal-tunnel-syndrome?hsLang=en) - pain radiates from the medial side of heel towards the center of heel.

## What causes Medial Calcaneal Neuritis?

- The nerve may become entrapped due to excessive over pronation or pressure from shoes

## When to see a foot doctor about Medial Calcaneal Neuritis:

- If you have burning pain below the medial malleolus or bony bit on the inside of the ankle
- Experience tenderness around the medial malleolus
- If pain is radiating under the sole of the foot
- If physical activity aggravates the condition

## If I have Medial Calcaneal Neuritis, what are my ankle pain treatment options?

### Non-Surgical:

- Rest
- Ice/cold wrap
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Electrotherapy/ultrasound
- Physical therapy
- Corticosteroid injection
- Custom Orthotics

### Surgical:

If rest and conservative treatment fail to treat the symptoms, nerve decompression with neuroplasty may be recommended by your foot surgeon.
